Real estate is very expensive. Today, efficient use of space is crucial and smaller homes on smaller lots are becoming more common. With space at a premium, in both the suburbs and in the city, anything that helps make space more livable and usable is a great idea.

People may work and live in existing buildings converted to apartments. Whatever can be used to help space be more efficient is valued.

He wanted to be able to entertain young ladies in his apartment. There was only one problem with this. Proper young women would not enter a young man’s bedroom during this period. Because of this, Murphy developed a way to hide the bed during his entertaining, so it was not a bedroom.

The way he managed this was to come up with a way to flip up the made up bed on end and stored in a closet. Thus it could be stored out of sight, but made immediately available when it was needed.

In 1900 or so, Murphy patented his invention. He started making the beds, and the product became quite popular as people wanted to use them to help save space. In 1906, after the San Francisco earthquake, the popularity of Murphy beds became even more popular.

The quake caused massive damage throughout much of the city. What living space remained was very crowded. Murphy beds became a popular way to utilize the available space to the utmost, and his business prospered.

Murphy moved this flourishing business to New York in the 1920s. It is still there, and still producing beds. More and more people living in cities and apartments means that Murphy beds are useful and popular. These are so well made that many of the original Murphy beds produced are still in use today.

Efficient use of space is prized in many different areas. In these spaces, such as hotels and hospitals, offices, fire stations, and apartments, Murphy beds are popular and frequently used.
